ATLANTA – March 9, 2016 – The Newton Fund, a local fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, has awarded $15,000 in grants to three local nonprofits making a measurable difference in the county. The announcement was today’s featured program at the Covington-Newton County Chamber of Commerce Lunch Link Program at the Georgia Wildlife Federation.
Betsy Morehouse and Candy Morris, members of the Newton Fund Grantmaking
Committee, presented grants of $5,000 each to the following organizations:
- Action Ministries mobilizes communities to address the challenges of poverty by focusing on hunger relief, housing and education.
- FaithWorks provides Newton County’s neediest citizens with emergency financial aid through the combined resources of local churches.
- Newton County Community Partnership (NCCP) is charged with addressing the needs of families and children by building community collaborative strategies that foster individual empowerment and thus, community development. NCCP goals are to improve health outcomes, lifelong school success and employability leading to a higher quality of life and community engagement.
Since 2005, the Newton Fund has granted more than $306,000 to local nonprofits, representing approximately 106 grants. The funds for today’s grants were raised by a combination of individual donations, proceeds from the Newton Fund’s annual Jersey Day and matching funds from the Community Foundation. “We are proud of the work that these three organizations are doing to address local challenges,” said Alicia Philipp, president of the Community Foundation. “We are pleased to play a role in helping them continue that valuable work.”
In addition to providing annual grants, the Newton Fund also offers philanthropic learning opportunities and community awareness activities, all with the goal of building philanthropy and improving the quality of life in Newton County.During the program, Newton Fund Advisory Committee Chair Greg Proffitt updated nonprofit leaders and Chamber members about the Newton Fund Jersey Day campaign. “Jersey Day is a fun and impactful way for local businesses to engage in philanthropy and be recognized as good corporate citizens. One hundred percent of dollars raised in 2015 went directly to supporting Newton County nonprofits.”
