Community Foundation to sunset Managing for Excellence program

Since 1984, our Managing for Excellence program has celebrated nonprofit organizations that exhibit exemplary management. We have been honored to help more than 66 nonprofits in metro Atlanta achieve greater reach and impact aligned with their mission. We are proud to have supported some of Atlanta’s most extraordinary and impactful organizations.

People are not perfect, and neither are organizations. Because good management is not all or nothing and every nonprofit can work to become better, we realized that the Managing for Excellence Award program was not honoring this reality because it highlighted only a select few organizations.

In the course of our work across Atlanta’s region, we interact with and learn about so many organizations that are truly incredible. Some organizations take big risks that pay off in community impact. Some have extremely strong governance. Others have rock-solid finances or brilliant, innovative strategic plans. By limiting the Managing for Excellence Award to two organizations annually, the Foundation limited our opportunities to recognize and promote many other strong nonprofits to our community and our donors.

Moving forward, the Community Foundation has determined to sunset the program while we examine different strategies to uplift more organizations that we know are making a difference across the region. We will continue encouraging best practices for our regional nonprofits and will continue to offer tools like Catchafire. We will also share stories about regional nonprofits that are implementing dynamic, innovative or exceptional best practices. We cannot wait to share more on this strategy later this year. Until then, thank you for all that you do for the Atlanta region. You inspire us.
