Celebrate Census Day this April 1 by completing your 2020 Census form!
While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption, uncertainty and hardship, the 2020 Census, mandated by our U.S. Constitution, is well-underway.
There is so much at stake for getting this population count right. Health care, education and emergency planning all depend on getting an accurate census count. And the 2020 Census data will be used for the next 10 years for federal funding allocations to Georgia (SNAP, Medicaid and Section 8 Vouchers), our number of representatives in Congress and how state legislative and school districts lines are drawn.
Since 2019, the Community Foundation for Greater has supported 2020 Census efforts with 34 grant awards totaling $705,000 to encourage participation among those in the region who were undercounted in 2010 – African American men, low-income children birth to 5 and immigrants.
These trusted voice nonprofits were already implementing plans to overcome unprecedented challenges – the first online form, fewer local field offices and increased government distrust. Now, the pandemic presents the biggest hurdle, and our grantees are pivoting their efforts to adapt. Stay tuned as we highlight their creative and critical efforts to ensure a complete count.
So let’s do our part today on Census Day, making sure as many people as possible complete the census form – online, by phone or through the mail. The online form is available in 13 languages and video guides are available in many more.
And when you’re done, tell a friend and your friend’s friend and so on and so on!
It takes about 10 minutes to complete a census form but impacts decisions across our communities and state for the next 10 years!
