Traditionally, we focus on giving back at the end of the year, but why not incorporate it into your summer plans? If you are taking a vacation, you might have more time to reflect or already be with those you love. Here are some ideas.
Have a conversation with your family or friend by taking turns asking the questions below.
- Describe a favorite summer memory or favorite summer tradition.
- What do you need to make more time for?
- What does community mean to you? Why is it important?
- What gives you energy? What helps you relax? What inspires you?
- If you had a magic wand and could solve one community issue right now, what would it be? How does that reflect what you value?
After talking about your values using the prompts above, take action! Below are some suggestions on how to make an impact now.
- Make a collaborative gift or grant to an organization. Decide on the amount and organization together.
- Support an arts or cultural organization or local artists as you plan activities – buy tickets to see a play, live music, class or exhibit.
- Get a group together to volunteer at a local nonprofit organization or take the time to clean up a beach, park or gathering place. For volunteer ideas, visit Hands On ATL or Pebble Tossers.
- Prepare for our upcoming conversation with Dr. Matthew Desmond by reading his new book, “Poverty, By America.” Donors – contact our philanthropy team for your free copy!
