The sudden closure of the MINT Gallery on August 9, 2024, left 16 Atlanta artists scrambling to find new spaces for their work. The gallery, known for supporting emerging artists, gave them only eight days’ notice to vacate, sparking a whirlwind of emotions for the artists. Honey Pierre, a textile artist whose work has illuminated the halls of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta since 2023 says, “It was shocking to receive an email out of the blue, telling us we had only eight days to pack up everything and leave.” She added, “MINT was like a home to me, a place where I could express myself and connect with the community. Losing that so suddenly felt like losing a part of myself.” Pierre’s work, known for its vibrant colors and intricate designs, had been a staple at MINT gallery.
The sudden displacement forced her to find a new home for her creations quickly.
“I had to think fast. Luckily, I found a new studio that welcomed me with open arms. It’s not the same as MINT, but it’s a fresh start,” said Pierre. Jasmine Williams, another Atlanta-based artist who immediately rushed to support Honey and the other artists says, “MINT was more than just a gallery; it was a space where emerging artists could truly find their voice and grow.”
The closure of MINT Gallery is a significant loss for the Atlanta art community and is a direct result of a lack of funding for the arts. According to data from the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, Georgia ranks at or near the bottom tier of states that provide funding to agencies supporting artists.
Williams says, “Art reflects our society and culture, capturing moments and emotions that might otherwise be forgotten. We must fund and support the arts to ensure that these vital expressions continue to enrich our communities.” The Foundation supports the artists with a small stipend to defray moving costs, but continued support is needed.
Art enthusiasts and community members are encouraged to support the former MINT artists by signing the solidarity statement and making a contribution to their GoFundMe.
