National Homeownership Month: Building a More Stable Housing Future for Metro Atlanta

Safe, stable, and affordable housing is foundational to thriving communities. It shapes health, educational outcomes, economic mobility, and the ability for families to build wealth and put down roots.

During National Homeownership Month, much of the conversation focuses on helping families buy homes. That work matters. But in metro Atlanta, another part of the housing story deserves more attention: helping families keep, repair, and pass down the homes they already own.

For many families, a home is more than a place to live. It is a foundation for stability, family wealth, and long-term opportunity. But rising costs, aging homes, critical repair needs, and legal barriers can threaten that stability, even for families who already own their homes.

Housing Stability Requires Multiple Solutions

Housing challenges cannot be solved through a single program or investment. Expanding affordable housing, preventing homelessness, preserving existing homeownership, supporting community-based developers, strengthening nonprofit capacity, and advancing effective housing policy all play an important role.

Solving the rapidly growing housing problem in Atlanta relies on a collaborative solution leveraging private, public and philanthropic partner funds to produce significantly more affordable housing.

  • Through our Housing Stability Grant portfolio, we invest in nonprofit organizations addressing homelessness, eviction prevention, affordable housing policy and advocacy, and other efforts that help families remain safely housed.
  • As the lead agency for the WORTH Atlanta Homeownership Collaborative, CFGA also brings together business, civic, nonprofit, and philanthropic partners to expand homeownership opportunities while preserving existing homeownership across Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties.
  • CFGA’s impact investing efforts through the GoATL Affordable Housing Fund have helped support the creation of new units and the preservation of existing affordable housing stock.
  • Long-term partnerships with key organizations like HouseATL and regional housing nonprofits have amplified the impact of every dollar invested by our generous donors.

These initiatives address different parts of the housing ecosystem, but they share a common goal: ensuring more people have access to stable, affordable housing and the opportunity to build lasting security.

Why Philanthropy Matters

Homeownership preservation is one of the places where flexible philanthropic capital can make a meaningful difference. Public funding is essential, but it often cannot move quickly enough or flexibly enough to address the barriers families face before stability is at risk.

Philanthropic investment can help legal partners resolve tangled titles, support critical home repairs, strengthen nonprofit capacity, and help community-based developers move housing projects closer to reality. It can also help align public, private and nonprofit resources around solutions that last beyond a single program or funding cycle.

For donors who care about affordable housing, economic mobility and the future of metro Atlanta, this is an opportunity to invest before a family is displaced, before a home falls into disrepair and before generational wealth is lost.

HDDC’s Front Porch 348-372 Auburn Avenue, Atlanta, GA 30303 and 349 Old Wheat Street, Atlanta, GA 30303 Once complete, Phase One of the Front Porch @ Sweet Auburn will consist of 33 fully furnished residential units, with a total of 67 beds in co-living (leases by room, rather than entire unit) and traditional rental units.

A Growing Focus: Helping Homeowners Stay Rooted

Looking ahead, CFGA is expanding its work in homeownership preservation. Thanks to a new grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation, CFGA will support tangled title prevention and remediation, owner-occupied home repairs, financing tools that strengthen housing stability, capacity-building support for community-based developers, and regional collaboration through HouseATL.

For donors and partners, homeownership preservation offers a powerful opportunity to protect stability, strengthen neighborhoods and help more families share in metro Atlanta’s growth.

CFGA works with donors, nonprofits, civic leaders and community partners to align resources around long-term housing solutions. To learn more about how philanthropic investment can support housing stability across the region, connect with the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.
