Three major hurricanes have made landfall in less than a month in one of the most active hurricane seasons in years. Rescue efforts continue as emergency crews respond to the damage and destruction left by hurricane Maria. Maria lashed the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic early Thursday morning, where she’d been downgraded to a Category 3 – just a few hours after she whirled through Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm with winds of up to 155 mph. Maria is one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Puerto Rico in more than 80 years. Officials are forecasting the recovery effort on the island will take months. The destruction caused by the storm to this U.S. commonwealth has been declared a federal disaster by President Donald Trump.
Here are some organizations we’ve identified who are assisting with recovery. We will continue to add to this list in the coming weeks. Please note that since this is an international disaster, these organizations have been reviewed by the Community Foundation but not fully vetted.
