Artist spotlight: Charity Hamidullah

For Black History Month, we’re spotlighting our partners and community members who help build a stronger, more vibrant Atlanta. One of these partners is artist and muralist Charity Hamidullah. Learn more about her below.

How does your art celebrate or reflect Black history culture or experiences?
My art celebrates and reflects black culture in every component. From color palettes to intentional markings. People to quilt-like elements. I live and create to honor our stories and remind us that we are art in the flesh to be loved, cherished and immortalized through creation. 

Is there a Black leader, another Black artist or moment in history that inspires your work?
My work and practice are inspired by every Black being in Atlanta. We are truly powerful. When I look at my circle and friends I see the next King, the next Corretta, Basquiat – this world’s greats living in the flesh. But, if I had to pinpoint one person, I would say Miya Bailey. To me, he is not only an artist who inspires me, but a businessman and community leader who continuously connects, uplifts and inspires at every moment possible with true action. What he has been creating in Castleberry should not be overlooked and will be in the history books.  

What is your hope for the future of the Black arts community in Atlanta?
To me, the Black arts community in Atlanta is overflowing with greatness, positivity and life-changing action. But, if I had hopes, I pray that we would truly unite more than we already do. Selflessly, so that everyone wins, rises and creates a foundation that is unbeatable. Sustainable, with an ecosystem that circulates as a community with the common goal for all to thrive and prosper.
