Connecting the Dots for Atlanta: Ryan Wilson on Philanthropy, Visibility, and Impact

For Ryan Wilson, founder of The Gathering Spot and a longtime civic leader in Atlanta, philanthropy is about more than giving. It’s about connection. As a member of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s Board of Directors, he sees the Foundation as uniquely positioned to bring together the people, resources, and organizations working to shape the city’s future.

“We’re at a crossroads in Atlanta,” Ryan says. “We have to decide if the city is going to work for everyone. The Foundation sits at the intersection of the organizations and the funding needed to solve some of our biggest challenges.”

Ryan first connected with the Foundation in 2019, shortly after CEO Frank Fernandez stepped into the role. Since then, he has become both a partner and an advocate, particularly when it comes to raising awareness about the Foundation’s work.

“A lot of what the Foundation does, people don’t fully realize,” he says. “Part of what I’ve been passionate about is helping tell that story—that this resource exists, and that this work is happening.”

Expanding Access to Opportunity

As a donor, Ryan appreciates how the Foundation goes beyond simply facilitating giving. Instead, it acts as a guide helping donors discover new opportunities and make more informed decisions.

“It’s a great vehicle to formalize your giving,” he says. “But what’s really valuable is the ability to learn about organizations you might not otherwise encounter.”

Through curated recommendations, the Foundation connects donors to nonprofits aligned with their interests, often highlighting organizations that don’t have the visibility or resources to promote themselves.

“In the absence of that, the same organizations tend to get the majority of funding,” Ryan explains. “The Foundation helps level the playing field by giving visibility to groups doing great work that might not have a big platform.”

A Local Advantage

For Ryan, that local focus is what sets the Community Foundation apart.

“A fund is a fund,” he says. “What makes the Foundation different is its focus on Atlanta. It’s the best local vehicle you can use to have an impact in your community.”

That deep understanding of the city allows the Foundation to serve as both a connector and a curator, helping donors translate their values into meaningful action. Whether someone is interested in education, youth development, or another issue, the Foundation can provide targeted insights and opportunities to engage.

“The Community Foundation helps fund and resource the most pressing issues in our city,” Ryan says. “And it does that by building relationships.”

Looking Ahead

As Atlanta continues to grow, Ryan sees both opportunity and urgency. While the city has a long tradition of tackling complex challenges, he believes more can be done to strengthen connections across the philanthropic ecosystem.

“We need more people to understand how the Foundation works,” he says. “It’s a bridge between donors and nonprofits—and both sides are essential.”

For Ryan, the path forward is clear: greater awareness, stronger relationships, and a continued commitment to solving the issues that matter most.

“Atlanta has always had a spirit of figuring things out, even when the challenges feel impossible,” he says. “That gives me hope.”
