Frequently asked questions

Yes. You may pay a pre-existing, legally binding pledge, or a capital campaign pledge, from your fund as long as:

The grant letter to the donee institution does not reference the pledge.
You do not receive — directly or indirectly — any other benefit that is more than an
incidental benefit as a result of the donor-advised fund distribution.
You do not attempt to claim an income tax charitable deduction from the distribution.

If you have any questions, please call your philanthropic officer.

Only the advisors who signed the original agreement may make recommendations from your fund unless the donor informs us otherwise in writing. For example, if you want your children to recommend grants, please send us a note providing that authority clearance.

IMPORTANT SECURITY NOTE: Please be aware if you share your online ID and password with others, they will have the ability to review your fund activity and recommend grants from your fund. Protect your ID and password at all times.

We encourage you to plan ahead for the future of your fund beyond your lifetime. You have several options to consider. You can name successor advisors for your fund. Or you can designate your fund to a particular organization, multiple organizations or specific area of interest. Another option involves placing your fund into the Foundation’s Unrestricted Fund, where it will meet the changing needs of our community. In addition, it can be designated to the Foundation’s Operating Fund to support the work of the Community Foundation for generations to come.
