The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta’s commitment to strengthening and supporting the nonprofit sector includes more than giving financial grants. Since 2009 the Foundation has offered a variety of resources that help strengthen nonprofit organizations through our work in Nonprofit Effectiveness: from management consulting support through the Nonprofit Toolbox to free top-quality seminars and programs on topics of critical importance to nonprofits. On June 14, we offered a webinar in partnership with BoardSource on a topic of grave importance to all of us – succession planning for nonprofit organizations (the webinar was recorded and is available here, and the webinar presentation can be found here).
The Foundation is pleased to invite all eligible nonprofit organizations to apply to participate in a program that will educate your organization’s board and staff leaders on all aspects of succession planning. The Foundation is partnering with BoardSource to offer this program. This is the second year the Foundation will offer the six-month program for a cohort of 15 nonprofit executives and board leaders. Effective nonprofit boards understand that Executive Director/CEO departures are inevitable; whether it is an emergency transition or a planned transition. These exceptional boards collaborate with the Executive Director/CEO to identify key strategies, information and tools in advance in order to prepare for the executive’s transition, whenever it might occur. Through this program, nonprofit executives and board leaders will learn about the essential elements of succession planning, resulting in developing your organization’s succession plan.
The program will include four in-person sessions spaced five to six weeks apart and limited coaching following the conclusion of the program; it is provided free of charge. Complete details can be found in the guidelines. As we have a limited number of slots available, we created a short application to help us select the organizations that are most ready to participate in this opportunity. We will select no more than 15 nonprofits to participate in this pilot project.
